Job summary

UHS (East) is the regional teaching NHS Trust working across two sites: the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath. The Brighton campus includes the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital and the Sussex Eye Hospital and is the regional Major Trauma centre within the National Major Trauma Network.

We provide general acute services to our local populations in and around the City of Brighton and Hove, Mid Sussex and the western part of East Sussex and more specialised and tertiary services for patients across Sussex and the southeast of England.

Both hospitals provide many of the same acute services for their local populations. In addition, the Princess Royal is our centre for elective orthopaedic surgery and our hip fracture unit and the Royal Sussex County Hospital is our centre for major trauma, specialist orthopaedic trauma and critical care. Our specialised and tertiary services include orthopaedics, neurosciences, paediatrics, cardiac, cancer, renal, vascular surgery, infectious diseases and HIV medicine.

Central to our ambition is our role as developing academic health sciences centre, a provider of high-quality teaching, and a host hospital for cutting edge research and innovation; and on this we work with our partner, Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS), the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Postgraduate Deanery and our local Universities.

Main duties of the job

These posts can be part time or full time and worked in an annualised way with flexible rostering using Healthrota software, where Drs pre-state the days they want off and rotas are built around their needs as well as those of our patients.

The full-time jobs are 48 hours per week, but you will receive 2 hours of non-rostered time for things like audits and quality improvement projects as well as traditional teaching. A further 1 hour of non-rostered time will be allocated to accommodate late finishes where shifts overrun by a small amount.

These jobs are designed to support post F2 doctors to do clinical work but with non-clinical paid time whilst enabling job sustainability and satisfaction. It is great for those wishing to take some time out after F2 and want flexibility, stability, training, supervision, a study budget as well as GMC revalidation but do not yet want to commit to a training programme. They are also great for people who want to take some time out of a formal training programme.

About us

Successful candidates will be expected to work at both the Princess Royal Hospital, PRH (Haywards Heath) and/or the Royal Sussex County Hospital, RSCH (Brighton).

PRH hosts our Hip Fracture Unit and our ring-fenced elective unit, the Sussex Orthopaedic Treatment Centre (SOTC). RSCH is a major trauma centre and teaching hospital.

All hip fracture admissions are directed to PRH and managed in the hip fracture unit between our dedicated T&O surgical team and Orthogeriatric medical team. Successful candidates will work closely with both teams to manage this complex patient cohort in addition to elective patients treated at SOTC. There is a daily T&O consultant ward round and additional consultant orthogeriatric ward round most days of the week.

All other orthopaedic trauma cases are admitted to RSCH including major trauma patients and complex tertiary trauma patients who are referred from across the region.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Ideally you have decided on Trauma and Orthopaedics as your preferred career or be in an allied specialty with an interest in surgery. Alternatively, you may have done F2 and are looking for a new experience before deciding what you would like to do. You will have an active interest in improving the quality of care within the Trust. You will be capable of managing projects both independently and under supervision and be skilled at team working. Regular supervision meetings with a training Consultant will help you shape your future career.

The UHSussex (East) Trauma and Orthopaedic Department is keen to promote extra-clinical interests and the Consultant body has expertise in education, research, quality improvement and management.

During clinical time, the post holder will act as an SHO. They will work primarily at PRH, but must be flexible in working across both sites as this is to ensure exposure to a wider case-mix.
