Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, flexible and motivated person to join the Brighton & Sussex Diabetic Eye Screening Programme as a Retinal Screening Photographer. The successful applicant will work with the retinal screening team and be responsible for providing visual acuity examinations and digital photography during retinal screening clinics.

The successful applicant will be given full in house training to ensure they are competent to administer patient eye drops and perform a visual acuity test in preparing the patient for digital photography. The successful applicant will also be given full training to perform digital photography of the patient's retina in a dark environment within an office. Excellent patient management during clinics is essential to ensure a timely screening process.

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake Health Screeners Diploma. This is a level 3 qualification (A' level standard) which will take 2 years to complete. Some hours will be allocated during the working time however, you will be expected to study in your own time.

Main duties of the job

To provide photographic to the people with diabetes in living within Brighton and Sussex

To provide a comprehensive Diabetic Eye Screening Service, including retinal imaging and interpretation of retinal images.

To comply with NDESP standards

Undertakes primary interpretation of results and provision of reports.

Works collaboratively on a day-to day basis with others to contribute to the smooth and efficient running of the service.

Responsible for undertaking analysis to support the quality assurance of grading in the Diabetic Eye Screening Programme.

Clinical: Core Responsibilities
  1. Ensures that patients are treated with courtesy at all times; their individual needs are respected, maintain patient privacy and dignity.

  9. Takes a full history for patients with a reduced visual acuity, including last optometrist visit, past medical history to ensure best outcome for the patient.
  10. Records notes which are necessary to assist in the success for the follow up visits, such as poor to dilate, wheelchair users, any mental or physical impairment which may require additional prior knowledge by the screener.
  11. Uses the time with the patients to increase their understanding and knowledge of diabetes and how it can affect the eyes, as appropriate.

  1. Responsible for informing admin staff and line manager of issues ongoing during clinics
  2. Liaises with IT helpdesk, software company and camera engineers as appropriate in the event of technical issues and records the outcomes and informs the Line Manager

  4. Provides and receives complex or sensitive information, relating to patient care, recognising barriers to understanding. Uses interpersonal skills to communicate condition related information clearly and concisely with colleagues, patients, carers and relatives, providing empathy and reassurance
  5. Reports all concerns, accidents and incidents relating to self, patients, staff or visitors in accordance with the Trust incident reporting system (Datix)
  6. Participates effectively in the programme and team teaching sessions the rest of the DESP team
