Job summary
Band 6/7 Cardiac Physiologist - Echocardiography (band appointed dependent on experience/qualifications).
We are seeking a dynamic and conscientious Echocardiographer to work at Barts Health NHS Trust. The successful candidate will work at the Barts Heart Centre, St Bartholomew's Hospital located in The City of London, with rotation to one of the other sites within the Trust network and contribute to the weekend working rota on a rotational basis. This role will provide the successful candidate with exposure to a variety of complex cardiac pathologies and clinical situations.
To be successful in being appointed to a band 7 post, the applicant must have full BSE/EACVI transthoracic accreditation (or international equivalent) and be able to work independently providing this service. Applicants who have passed the written accreditation exam and are working towards full accreditation may be offered a Band 6 position (the expectation of independent working and weekend rota commitments would not start until full accreditation is achieved).

Main duties of the job
An experienced Chief Cardiac Physiologist/Highly Specialized Echocardiographer/Cardiac Scientist is required to work competently in a busy Echocardiography Department. The post-holder will be required to perform unsupervised complex-level tasks and assist senior staff as needed. The post holder must be able to rotate between St Bartholomew's Hospital and one other hospital site within the Trust network. They also required joining the weekend rotation for delivering a 7-day NHS service. The post-holder will be required to work autonomously as a senior staff member within the non-invasive Cardiac Diagnostics department, assisting senior staff with managerial tasks. In addition, the post-holder will be required to supervise, train, guide, and support staff in the performance of their roles and to give support to senior staff members.

- To be proficient at performing transthoracic echocardiography independently to BSE/EACVI standards.
- To perform a range of highly complex diagnostic echocardiograms (challenging cases such as inherited cardiomyopathies, oncology patients, stroke, high risk inpatients in Intensive care settings) on adults with a broad spectrum of pathology, in both outpatient and inpatient environments, at independent level (after department sign-off).
- To use initiative, apply problem-solving approach and report complex diagnostic echocardiograms without supervision, at independent level.
- To participate in a multidisciplinary team delivering specialist echocardiographic services; liaising with the Cardiac Outpatients medical and nursing staff, Cardiac Surgical team, Heart Failure Nurse Consultant, Arrhythmia Nurse Specialist, Cardiac Rhythm Management and Electrophysiology teams
- To communicate with clarity and sensitivity to a broad range of patient groups (children, adolescents, adults, elderly) showing empathy and emotional support when required (e.g. terminal stages of illness, following a traumatic clinical event).
- To participate directly in all department research programs by providing support with research protocols development, performing echocardiograms in accord to research protocols, analysis of technical and clinical research data.
