Job summary

At RWT Radiology, we recognise the value of diversifying entry routes into Diagnostic Radiography & we are recruiting to our established & celebrated Diagnostic Radiography Apprenticeship again this year.

Applicants will commit to undertaking all formal & informal study required to fulfil the needs of the post and the learning provider.

Upon successful completion, you will gain a BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography Degree & will be eligible to apply for registration with the HCPC.

Successful applicants will work 37.5h per week with 20% off the job time. Hours of work in year 1 will be 09.00 - 17.00 Mon to Fri. In years 2 & 3 applicants will undertake the full range of shifts worked within Radiology to include weekends, nights & bank holidays.

Applicants must commit to cross site working at our Cannock Chase Site, New Cross Site & with private partners in the West Midlands.

At least six GCSEs (or equivalent) grade C or above (grade 4 or above in the reformed GCSEs (England) including: Mathematics, English Language, Combined or Single Science subjects, plus:

Youmust be at least 18 years old at the start of your application and demonstrate recent in person work experience in a radiology department.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be employed by The Royal Wolverhampton Hospital NHS Trust as an apprentice radiographer and will work within the imaging departments based at New Cross Hospital, Cannock Chase Hospital and with private partner hospitals. The post holder will work as part of the plain imaging workforce and will rotate through all speciality modalities as part of their course content and learning structure.

You will be an integral part of our team and will work alongside qualified radiographers, assistant practitioners, students and other multidisciplinary team members to provide care and high quality imaging to patients accessing radiology services.

We have an apprenticeship team to offer you support with university applications, pastoral care and mentoring. In the Radiology department, you will be supported by our Lead Educators and Practice Education Facilitators ensuring your journey is positive and rewarding.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post holder will make a commitment to study both within working hours and in their own time for the duration of the course.

The post holder will attend virtual tutorials, webinars and face-to-face learning as instructed by the approved education provider.

The post holder will work in the imaging departments to undertake specific protocol led radiographic examinations as an operator in accordance with IRMER17, under the supervision of a HCPC registered Radiographer.

To produce a good quality diagnostic images under the supervision of a qualified radiographer, whilst keeping the radiation dose as low as is reasonably practicable.

To be responsible for radiation protection of patients/carers/other staff during radiographic procedures.

To ensure that you use all equipment safely and in accordance with operating/manufacturer instructions.

To care for patients, carers, visitors, and relatives during their visit to the department and to monitor and report immediately any change in the patients condition whilst within the Imaging department to a senior member of staff.

To work within an agreed scope of practice and within their own competencies, taking personal responsibility but referring to qualified staff in all matters outside of the prescribed practice.

To ensure that all referrals are justified and authorised as per employers procedures.

To comply with Trust policies.

To maintain associated records including paper and IT records to comply with IR(ME)R 2017 and department procedures.

To liaise with a wide range of staff caring for the patient- including medical staff, ward staff, staff of other departments.

To work flexibly to provide services including at weekends, evenings and Bank Holidays.

To undertake training on the Patient Management System (PMS), the Radiology Information System (RIS) and the Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) to ensure that patient information is stored and retrieved accurately.

To ensure a clean, tidy and safe working environment, adhering to the cleaning SOPs in place for each clinical area.

To undertake any reasonable duty that may arise which will assist the smooth running of the Radiology Service.

To wear the uniform provided and to promote the Radiology Directorate in a positive manner at all times.

To enhance the patients experience

To be courteous and helpful towards patients, visitors, staff and referring clinicians/GPs and to offer a high quality service at all times.

To recognise and support equality and diversity and to treat patients of all demographic groups with respect and courtesy.

Have the ability to develop a short-term rapport with patients, introducing yourself to the patient and carer.

To handle and deal with proper disposal of bodily fluids where required.

To provide first line assistance in the event of a patients query or complaint and passing the matter to a more senior member of staff where appropriate. This will at times require a high level of communication skills to diffuse confrontational situations. The post holder is required to have knowledge of the Trusts Complaints Procedure.

To manage and develop the performance of the team

To work in a multi-disciplinary team and to encourage team development and facilitate the professional development of other personnel.

To assist in the training of new members of staff, supporting them through their induction programme.

To ensure effective contribution to the delivery of the organisations objectives

To be familiar with and comply with all appropriate Trust and Radiology Directorate Policies, Procedures and Practices, making suggestions which could lead to improvements in the service.

To promptly report any equipment failures to the Department Superintendent or the Medipass Helpdesk as appropriate.

To ensure that Risk Management, Health and Safety Regulations, COSHH Regulations, Local Rules and the Ionising Radiation Regulations are adhered to, and to report accidents/untoward incidents/hazards to the Superintendent or most senior Radiographer on duty as soon as is practicable.

To be familiar with and uphold the quality standards of the Trust and Radiology Directorate, to ensure a high quality service to patients at all times.

To be familiar with the principles of clinical governance and to strive to maintain and improve the quality of patient care, showing courtesy and consideration at all times.

To assist in the collection of any information required for audit purposes.

To attend and participate in clinical governance meetings.

The post holder will be subject to annual appraisal.
