Senior Clinical Fellow in Breast Radiology

Job responsibilities

As an integral member of the radiology team, the fellow will be responsible for:

Delivering screening and symptomatic breast services

Optimising patient management

Participating in MDT meetings

To communicate with respect and professionalism with all members of the multi-disciplinary team

To work within the framework of team decisions

Undertaking audit and service improvement projects

To work within the clinical governance framework of the service and contribute to the process including participation in quality improvement of services.

Collaborating in research

To assist in training of Radiology Registrars and Radiographer Advanced Practice

To undertake all work in accordance with Trust procedures and operating policies.

To embody and promote the ethos of integrated team working in your practice at all times

To take a whole systems approach to working with the wider health community

To show initiative, enthusiasm, flexibility and a sense of humour.

On-call

On-call is not a requirement of this fellowship.

Experience offered for this role

The fellowship will provide comprehensive specialist training in breast radiology, encompassing all aspects of symptomatic and screening breast imaging. A multidisciplinary approach will provide fundamental experience in breast pathology, cancer genetics, epidemiology, service management, quality control, audit and evaluation.

Fellows will be allocated an individual study leave budget to attend other relevant breast courses and conferences if they wish to do so.

Fellows will have access to online training materials and local library facilities. Employing Trusts will provide educational supervision, and formal assessments will be carried out using the RCR e-portfolio. A mentor will also be available to offer further support to the postholder, as required.

Fellows will be subject to both the local hospital appraisal process and an end of fellowship review.

Support Services

Outpatient and Assessment clinics are delivered from the Primrose Unit on level 07.

Education

The Trust is working in partnership with the Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry.

Research

There is opportunity and enthusiasm within the Department and Hospital for clinical research.

Clinical Audit

All junior staff passing through the department are actively encouraged to pursue a significant audit project during their time with the department with guidance from Consultants.

Clinical Governance

A Service Line Clinical Governance meeting is held monthly and a Care Group meeting is held quarterly to address governance issues. The department provides a quarterly clinical governance report.

Clinical Meetings

There are weekly multidisciplinary meetings. There is a monthly Audit and CME meeting organised by the department, as well as quarterly meetings to discuss unit policy.

Relationships

The post holder will be professionally accountable to the Medical Director and managerially accountable to the Service Line Director

Qualifications

Essential

• Full FRCR (uk candidates)
• Eligible for full GMC registration
• Recognised Postgraduate Radiology with min 3 year radiology training programme (International candidates)

Desirable

• Full GMC Registration
• Full FRCR (international candidates)
• Post-graduate qualification e.g. MRCP, FRCS, MRCS, PhD etc. or equivalent

Knowledge

Essential

• Evidence of formal training in diagnostic clinical radiology
• oEvidence of significant experience in breast radiology (at least at level of indirect supervision) to include: -Mammogram and ultrasound interpretation -Ability to perform US breast biopsy and other breast interventions with indirect supervision -Evidence of continuing professional development which includes involvement in breast imaging

Desirable

• Evidence of formal sub-specialty training in breast imaging
• Development of local protocols in imaging
• Experience in running breast clinics independently, i.e. mammography, US and interventions in the breast and axilla
• Prior experience of working in the NHS as a Radiologist

Clinical & Technical Skills

Essential

• Evidence of clinical competencies in breast radiology (portfolio/appraisal process)
• Confident in performing image guided interventional techniques
• An appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems
• IT skills and computer literacy

Desirable

• Ability to perform all breast intervention independently, including Vacuum Assisted Biopsies and Excisions under US or stereotactic control, localisations and axillary interventions
• Experience of reporting breast MRI

Communication

Essential

• Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
• Ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and other team members
• Proficiency in spoken and written English to the appropriate standard
• Good team player

Desirable

• Good ability to share knowledge with medical and non-medical colleagues
• Formal training in communication and counselling

Audit & Research

Essential

• Understanding the principles and application of audit and research in breast radiology
• Evidence of participation in clinical audit or research in breast radiology
• Clinical risk management and clinical governance

Desirable

• Evidence of leading on breast related audit or research project with publication
• Presentation of audit findings at national or international meetings
• Completion of formal Good Clinical Practice (GCP)/ audit/ research related training

Teaching

Essential

• Prior experience of teaching medical students and junior doctors
• Willingness to contribute to breast radiology teaching of Radiology Registrars, trainees and Allied Health Professionals.

Management

Essential

• Understanding of the principles of health service management and the NHS
• Evidence of participation in service improvement projects
• Understanding of NHS, clinical governance and resource constraints

Desirable

• Formal management and leadership training
• Experience in a managerial or leadership role within radiology
