STR3/higher General Surgery with interest in Breast surgery

Job summary

The appointed STR3 or higher will provide specialist care to patients with senior support and supervision and will work alongside Breast Consultants, Middle Grade and Junior Doctors in the provision of a high-quality elective, urgent and emergency Breast service for the patients attending Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust. The appointed STR3 will participate in the General Surgery On Call Rota alongside the wider General Surgery team consisting of Consultants, surgical trainees and foundation doctors.

The wider Breast multi-professional team includes Consultant Surgeons, Consultant Radiologists, Cancer Nurse Specialists, Physician Associates, Radiographers and other healthcare professionals contributing to the care of Breast patients.

  • Timetabled training opportunities in theatres/clinics and Emergency General Surgery on calls.
  • Participate in audits, research projects and publications.

Main duties of the job

Clinical / professional

  • Perform clinical duties expected of a STR3/ higher.
  • Take part in treatment (as allowed within regulations) and assessment services of the department as and when requested, and work within the policies/ procedures of the organisation.
  • Take patients history and perform physical examinations of a patient. Record details in the medical records (as per departmental and hospital standards).
  • Work collaboratively with the multi disciplinary clinical team. To encourage and ensure good working relationships.
  • Deliver supervised out-patients' clinics and procedures.
  • To communicate with GPs and other health professionals the outcome of clinical appointments in a timely way.
  • To contribute to the development of efficient pathways of care in accordance with current best practice and national guidelines.
  • To fully document all aspects of patient care and complete all required paperwork.
  • Support and contribute to timely discharge planning including completing discharge summaries.
  • Have, develop and maintain specialist medical knowledge.
  • Keep up to date with current guidelines and maintain best practice.
  • Provide specialised advice concerning care - accountable for direct delivery advice to the multi-disciplinary team across organisations, primary and secondary care and ensuring good service delivery.
  • Frequent concentration with work pattern being unpredictable - concentrating for patient assessment and interruptions . Some report writing and attending meetings
