An opportunity has arisen to join University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, Hotel Services team as a Portering Assistant
We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals who have a passion for customer satisfaction and who can work as part of a very busy Hotel Services Department and Portering team.
The successful applicants will be required to work various shifts through a 24 hour period/7 days per week including weekend, Bank Holiday and night working
We have three full time and one part time position (15 hours).
***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification***
Main duties of the job
The responsibilities will include:
- transporting patients by bed or chair between wards and departments using various methods of transportation
- transporting the deceased to the mortuary
- responding to emergency situations
- responding to requests for medical gas
- responding to requests for specimen collection and transportation to the Labs
- responding to out of hours requests for clean linen
- responding to requests to move furniture and equipment
- cleaning equipment used in the provision of the service

- To liaise with Clinical and Non-Clinical Staff to ensure correct patient prioritisation processes are in place and adhered to
- To liaise with Clinical and Non-Clinical Staff regarding the interventions the patients are undertaking, so that patients are taken to the correct destination for their procedure
- To liaise with Clinical and Non-Clinical Staff with regard to patient readiness, requirements and means of transportation prior to undertaking any task
- Assist Clinical Staff, Transfer Teams and Escorts where requested when moving patients
- To maintain clear and effective communication channels with Team Leaders and Clinical and Non Clinical Staff
- To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team on a daily basis and understand own workload and undertake requests received by Trust Staff
- To book patients in where necessary using the relevant IT / Task Management systems and ensure the system is updated so that appropriate reporting can be undertaken
- To ensure that patients details are correctly recorded on the relevant paperwork / systems (and any linked system) to enable any discrepancies are identified and reported
- Complete any relevant logs / paperwork and / or update suitable systems where requested when collecting or returning patients
- As directed and under direct supervision of Clinical /Registered Practitioner assist with any necessary controlled restraint of patients after the relevant training is undertaken
- Ensure any Portering related equipment is suitable for usage and report any problems via the appropriate person(s), remove from use until repaired and ensure the correct reporting / repair procedures are followed
- Check, transport and change Medical Gases (and their associated equipment) using suitable transportation to / from the appropriate storage facilities, within UHP and surrounding areas. Ensure correct and clean equipment is used and that you are suitably qualified for moving this equipment, which at times may be heavy and awkward to move
- Ensure that Portering related equipment is, suitably maintained, cleaned, stored, and accessible and used safely in compliance to Trust policies and procedures
- Maintain cleanliness of the relevant storage areas related to Portering and ensure area is kept clear of waste and accessibility is maintained
- Undertake routine Portering related cleaning as per cleaning schedules or directed by Team Leader
- Where applicable and within designated Teams carry out cleaning, disinfecting, identification of leak testing, scope validation and storage of all types of flexible scopes and their accessories, informing the nurse in charge of any problems with equipment
- Where applicable and within designated Teams, ensure that the scopes disinfection accountability labels are available for each set of patient records and copies filed for future reference and trace availability
- Where applicable and within designated Teams, check and document all scopes for angulations and other faults against the predetermined templates and also carry out and document monthly checks on the personal protective equipment kept in the department
- Ensure relevant and appropriate checks are undertaken at all times to ensure Patients are correctly identified prior to any movement. Report any discrepancies immediately
- Be able to assist in moving patients when required to do so and undertake Portering duties using correct manual handling techniques and suitable equipment
- Collect and return Trolleys, Beds, Wheelchairs from / to Theatres / Wards / Departments and ensure they are placed within designated areas and not blocking access or placed in restricted areas
- Assist in patient transfers from the Heli-Pad to the Emergency Department and other areas of the Trust
- Assist in movement of critically ill patients (ventilated) and associated equipment as directed by suitably qualified and registered Staff
- Assist in safe transportation, booking in and tracing of Patient notes across the Trust (and surrounding areas) and where applicable book in and out on the relevant system(s). This is in relation to Portering activity
- Where required collect and return any X-Ray films / notes / referrals to wards and departments in a timely manner in relation to Portering activity
- Transfer deceased patients to and from the mortuary when requested ensuring patient privacy, dignity, respect and confidentiality is maintained through-out
- Be available to help with shadow shifts for new Staff as part of the induction process, thus helping them integrate into the Team. Give advice and support when requested or needed
- Communicate/escalate any issues or risks relating to providing an effective Portering service to the relevant Clinical or Non-Clinical Staff and / or Portering Team Leaders
- Carry out any other Portering related duties as directed by the Team Leader and work in accordance with the individual systems of work devised for the areas
- To work independently at times and as part of a team to undertake daily routine tasks
- Ensure patient confidentiality is maintained at all times. Report any breaches of Patient Confidentiality immediately to Team Leaders and / or relevant Clinical or Non-Clinical leads.
- Where required answer any telephone calls in a timely, polite manner dealing with patients, relative and Staff enquires. Seek advice from relevant Clinical / Non-Clinical Staff when providing a response
- To be aware of and comply with the Trusts policies and procedures, particularly fire, COSHH and Health & Safety policies
- Support the continual quality initiative programme ensuring a quality first approach to all aspects of work within the work environment
- Work in an environment where there is occasional exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances and occasional exposure to highly unpleasant working conditions including (but not limited to): Bodily Odour and smells, bodily fluids, faeces, vomit, blood, injuries minor and major trauma
