Job summary

The Consultant Sonographer will clinically lead the Non Obstetric Ultrasound Service for the Imaging Directorate.

They will liaise with Clinicians and Service Managers to develop and influence the strategic plan to ensure optimum patient care.

The Consultant Sonographer will be a champion for the Ultrasound Service and Directorate, leading developments in practice and bringing innovative solutions to patient care. They will develop the sonographic and wider multi disciplinary team , working between a clinical and non clinical environment to ensure expert clinical practice , education , research/audit and clinical leadership are incorporated into all aspects of the ultrasound service.

They will be an autonomous practitioner performing and reporting a range of ultrasound examinations across a range of patient pathways. They must have expert knowledge and opinion within the field of ultrasound.

The post holder must be adhere to Professional Codes of Conduct and the Society of Radiographer Guidance for Consultant Practice. They must comply with National, Trust and Local policies, protocols and guidelines.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Practice

  • Be an autonomous practitioner , Independently perform and report a range of ultrasound examinations
  • To drive forward the boundaries of own practice and that of Sonographers and Advanced Practitioners.

Professional Leadership / Service Delivery

  • To provide effective clinical leadership for Sonographers, motivating and inspiring others to deliver the best care for patients within the directorate.
  • To engage with other clinicians across professions to develop and advance practice to formulate plans and strategies to implement improved service delivery.
  • To participate on national forums and share best practice, advising and proposing policy changes or service development at a local, regional and national level.

Education & Training

  • Contribute to the professional development of sonographers and support team as well as their own continuing professional development, actively seeking learning opportunities for the individual and on behalf of the Imaging Directorate.
  • Share professional knowledge and expertise through formal and informal teaching using flexible methods of delivery.

Audit and Research/Evidence Based Practice

  • Audit of own and others clinical practice to maintain high levels of clinical practice and service delivery
  • Undertake research projects to inform changes to clinical practice and service delivery
