Job summary
The Maxillofacial Laboratory at St George's provides support for a range of patients across a number of different specialities, most notably Maxillofacial Surgery, Restorative Dentistry, Orthodontic Dentistry, Plastics Surgery, Neurosurgery and ENT.
The role of the Maxillofacial Laboratory team is to work with multi-disciplinary staff in order to provide a routine and specialist service for patients requiring clinical technical and prosthetic support at St George's Hospital.
The laboratory incorporates state of the art facilities which will employ the services of a team of technicians, approximately 5-10 staff.
Responsibility for the delivery of a high quality clinical, scientific and advisory prosthetics service
To manage and develop a laboratory within the resources available and to ensure effective clinical technical and prosthetics services are provided.
To ensure that standards and quality are maintained and to contribute to the staff training and development of the department; including the teaching of nurses, clinical and postgraduate staff.
As part of the Departmental Management team the post holder will be responsible for day-to-day service delivery issues within the Maxillofacial Laboratory.
Main duties of the job
The provision of a specialist clinical and technical service for patients requiring maxillofacial prosthetic rehabilitation.
Responsibility for the development and delivery of high quality Maxillofacial Prosthetic Services at St George's Hospital
The development of important working protocols for a wide range of areas including cross-infection and sectional impression procedures.
The delivery of specialist teaching in the context of Maxillofacial Prosthetics & Technology to other members of staff, including SHOs, SpRs and consultants. Provide training as required to students on placement.
The provision of clinical and technical information regarding the long-term management of medical devices such as obturators, oro-facial prosthesis and care of osseointegrated implants and related parts.
The design, manufacture and fitting in the clinic and/or operating theatre of prostheses and appliances, their activation as necessary and the maintenance of the clinical review of custom made medical devices for patients with injuries of all types, including benign or malignant disease, deformities of the cranio-maxillofacial region and other parts of the body.
