Job summary
We have an exciting new opportunity for a Health Care Assistant to work alongside our nursing team in the Day Case Unit. Your role will be very varied and could involve anything from admitting patients pre-procedure, monitoring patients in the recovery area to working in the decontamination area. We complete minor therapeutic endoscopic and cystoscopic procedures and complete surgery for Plastics, dermatology and podiatry.
Main duties of the job
Once fully trained, your role will include admitting and taking observations in the recovery area post procedure. Working alongside the nursing team in the recovery area to maintain patient safety and ensure the bed spaces are cleaned and ready for the next patient. In the decontamination area, you will be cleaning and decontaminating scopes for endoscopy and cystoscopy. Ensuring that the scope tracking system is kept updated, and ensuring the endoscopy rooms are supplied with clean, decontaminated scopes ready for use as well as the rest of the hospital.

Job responsibilities
Under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse, carry out nursing procedures following verification of competency and assist with the care and treatment of patients. This will include: -
- Assisting with meeting the comfort and hygiene needs of patients which will include washing, oral care, escorting to toilet, assisting with bed pans/commodes, Cleaning bedspaces, dealing with dirty linen and other paraphernalia in accordance with procedures and preparing the bedspace for the next patient.
- With appropriate training, perform basic observations including blood pressure recording, heart and respiratory rate, urine sampling for urinalysis and pregnancy testing, Height and weight recordings.
- Once trained, ensure that scopes are cleaned, decontaminated and available for use as required in the procedure rooms and elsewhere in the hospital
- Ensure that all trust and unit procedures are followed.
- Attend training for decontamination, COSHH and Health and safety in line with role.
- Maintain the endoscope tracking system.
- Provide clean endoscopes to the endoscopy rooms and wider hospital as required.
- Assisting with meeting the dietary needs of patients which will include distribution of drinks and meals and helping patients to eat and drink as required.
- Make verbal reports to senior nursing staff regarding the patients in the department as necessary, following this up with written documentation as needed.
- Ensure that patients are helped to retain their dignity, respect and individuality.
- Participate in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients as required.
- Direct escort and visitors around the unit, clinic/ward and to other departments.
- Report back to registered staff all concerns about the patients condition.
- Take all reasonable steps to ensure the safe-keeping of patients property, in accordance with patients property procedure.
- Be aware of the need for confidentiality both in the written and spoken word.
- Comply with all Trust policies with particular regard to the policies and procedures carried out in the event of maintaining staff and patient safety.
- Report all accidents and untoward incidents to the nurse in charge of the area and complete an incident form in accordance with trust policy.
- Report problems with equipment and facilities to the nurse in charge.
- Be prepared to attend and undertake any necessary training, being aware of the need to develop oneself and to strive to increase personal knowledge.
- With training, undertake cannulation.
- Assist in the safe transfer of patients from chair/bed to bed.
- Assist in moving patients on beds around the department and to X-ray.
