Data Analyst - Infectious Disease
This job is now closed
Job summary
The NHS Respiratory Metagenomics Programme aims to introduce clinical metagenomic services in the NHS, with implementation underway in a growing national Network of up to 30 NHS Trusts by 2028. Essential to these efforts is the collection of multi-site evidence to continuously evolve the quality of service provision to support long term commissioning in the NHS. A multi-faceted evaluation is being undertaken as part of the programme, including multi-site observational studies and a health economic review.
The Data Analyst will be a core member of the evaluation team, working with senior leadership to shape the analytical strategy and generate insights from large-scale genomic and health data. They will provide insights to support decision making across a national network of laboratories and hospitals. The ideal candidate will have an interest and background in the subject area and a strong track record in producing understandable outputs and communicating clear, data driven insights.
Main duties of the job
The analyst will be responsible for using advanced analytical techniques to inform service and technology evaluation, and future commissioning of the service. This includes defining dataset requirements, designing collection and driving access, and implementing analytical solutions, including development and maintenance of code, to direct data driven decisions and to support a robust evaluation of the implementation, effectiveness, utility and benefits of metagenomics in microbiology services. They will work with complex clinical data across a range of EHR/LIMS systems across the network to generate datasets and monitor agreed evaluation metrics over time against programme milestones. The analyst will liaise with a range of clinical, scientific and operational colleagues within the programme team and across the UK, including NHS, UKHSA and academic partners. Additional responsibilities will include collating data submissions, data cleansing and validation to improve the quality, and presenting performance dashboards.
The analyst will also have the opportunity to work across other genomic service improvement programmes hosted at GSTT, working with colleagues in the Centre for Clinical Infection and Diagnostics Research and in the South East Genomic Medicine Service.
About us
NHS Respiratory Metagenomics Programme
The NHS Respiratory Metagenomics Programme has been commissioned by NHS England and the government's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology to revolutionise the diagnosis and surveillance of infectious disease in the UK through cutting edge genomic technology. The programme is a partnership between the NHS, UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), and Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) to embed pathogen agnostic metagenomic testing in NHS microbiology labs and ICUs by 2029. This cutting edge clinical service aims to provide same day clinical detection to improve outcomes for patients through accelerated diagnostics and personalised interventions, as well as providing real-time data signals to UKHSA to support emerging efforts in national surveillance through metagenomics. Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust is leading this national programme on behalf of the NHS, implementing the initial use case in respiratory infection and leading on translational research efforts with the potential to scale across multiple clinical settings. The programme serves as a test bed for the accelerated adoption of innovation in healthcare and a proof of concept in the use of a clinical diagnostic backbone in an 'always on' real-time UK pathogen surveillance system, with the potential to contribute to national and international solutions to emerging issues of biosecurity.
