Job summary

The Sheffield Ophthalmology Directorate are seeking to appoint a Part Time Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with a Special Interest in Cataract Surgery. This is a fixed term post until 31st March 2024 and will be based predominantly at the Northern General Eye Centre.

The Ophthalmology needs of Sheffield are served by a single Department of Ophthalmology based mainly at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital (RHH). The Northern General Eye Centre (NGEC) was also opened in May 2018 to provide cataract outpatient and elective theatre activity in a dedicated state of the art facility that is unique to Sheffield. Minor Oculoplastic surgery under Local anaesthesia is performed both within the Eye Department's own James West Treatment Centre (JWTC) as well as a newly built Minor Operations Suite (MOPS) at RHH and there is access to General anaesthetic cases within the Main Theatres at RHH.Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is based in the rapidly modernising city of Sheffield. The area allows a high quality of life, boasting leisure and lively cultural activities in the centre and being surrounded by the scenic countryside of the Peak District.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will, together with Consultant colleagues, be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive, effective and modern Ophthalmology service, practising the full remit of the specialty.

They will take his/her equal share in providing sub-specialty cover and will be required to cover for colleagues during periods of absence. He/she will have continuing responsibility for patients in his/her care and the proper functioning of the Department.

Appointments are made to the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The main duties of this post will be based at the Northern General Eye Centre but the person appointed is required to be sufficiently flexible to undertake their main clinical duties at any of the sites within the Trust and/or to change their base hospital.

The successful candidate will work according to the terms and conditions of the national consultant contract.
