Senior Biomedical Scientist - Diagnostic Cytology and Fresh Tissue Section Lead

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated individual to join the Histopathology Department in the role of a Senior Biomedical Scientist. We have recently moved to a brand-new state of the art facility and are looking to expand our workforce.

Cambridge University Hospitals Histopathology department is one of the largest in the country with over 130 non-medical staff supporting over 50 consultant histopathologists. There is site specific reporting,and we support many regional and national programmes. We are looking for people who have a desire for pushing the boundaries of current practice and want to join in a transformational programme of work which will involve adoption of new and innovative technologies and work practices. We have already adopted digital pathology and are looking to capitalise on the opportunities it offers. The department prides itself on staff development and offers many training and education opportunities for staff of all grades.

Main duties of the job

To practice as a Section Leader in the Histopathology Department undertaking a wide variety of automated and non-automated, complex analytical procedures requiring a high level of manual dexterity, prioritising and organising the workload to ensure continuity and efficiency of the service demonstrating expertise in Histopathological techniques.

This post involves staff supervision and management of a team within the Histopathology laboratory.

Participation in the Histopathology on-call and weekend rota is mandatory.

This post will be expected to participate in and lead the development of laboratory workflow processes and development of extended working hours for the routine laboratory.

To participate in the Mohs' Clinic and Thyroid FNA clinic.

To participate in the implementation of new technology and processes

To undertake the preparation of histological and cytological specimens, on rotation through the department, with the main focus in Diagnostic Cytology and fresh tissue

Ensure that all aspects of ISO 15189, and external governing bodies are achieved and maintained, in accordance with both local and national guidelines.

Participate in technical, quality and training and education as required by the department within scope of practice

Microscopic examination and reporting of crystals in synovial fluids.

  • MSc Cellular Pathology or IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma in Cellular Patholog or Management or Working towards or equivalent
  • IBMS Accredited Biomedical Science Degree or equivalent
