Band 7 Senior Radiographer for Lithotripsy and imaging

The closing date is 16 November 2025

Job summary

The Urology Service is dynamic and undergoing significant transformation, with opportunities for further improvement and development. The service manages general urology patients and operates a dedicated kidney stone service. The Maple Suite, equipped with a new Lithotripter, will soon launch an in-house lithotripsy service to provide planned and emergency shockwave lithotripsy for urology patients. This treatment uses electro-magnetically generated shockwaves to fragment urinary calculi, located via bi-plane imaging or ultrasound. The unit operates five days a week (8am-4pm) and may provide weekend emergency cover in line with BAUS guidelines.

In addition, the service will establish a five-day ultrasound clinic for haematuria and suspected bladder cancer, supporting a one-stop model of care. We are seeking a full-time Band 7 Senior Radiographer to work closely with the Urology team in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care. The post holder will help set up and run the ultrasound service and train on the Lithotripter to deliver a comprehensive five-day service.

Based in the Maple Suite at King George Hospital, the role involves assessing patients for treatment suitability, ensuring their care throughout the procedure, and liaising with the wider urology team. A working knowledge of IRMER 2017 regulations, radiation protection, and patient advocacy is essential, as is the ability to provide empathetic support to patients and families.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will along with the Urology team will deliver a high quality service with different patient presentations. The Radiographers are independent practitioners.

For the stone service there will be a wider variety of patients that will be encountered and will include those exhibiting anti-social and threatening behaviour.

About us

We're an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we're proud of and our patients are happy with. We're no longer in special measures; we've opened two new theatres at our Elective Surgical Hub in King George Hospital (KGH); and, in recognition of our progress, we've been shortlisted for Trust of the Year at the Health Service Journal Awards.

We operate from two main sites - KGH in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 330,000 people visiting them last year. We're campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen's and get rid of corridor care.

Our patients are benefitting from our Women's Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George's Health and Wellbeing Hub.

These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and are providing an extra 94,000 scans a year.

The majority of our 8,000 staff - who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We're proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

We're looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record that will be transformative for our staff and beneficial for our patients.
