Job summary
This is a an exciting job opportunity to join the Simulation Team. The Simulation service is seeking to appoint a registered practitioner with at least 12 months clinical experience. You will also need excellent technical and information technology skills.
As you will be working within a small team and delivering simulation training in the wider hospital, the successful candidate will require excellent communication, negotiation and influencing skills. You will be a competent organiser and able to manage your own time effectively. The role will primarily involve the management and maintenance of equipment including fault diagnosis and to provide solutions to improve equipment performance. You will also have the opportunity to be involved in the delivery of teaching.
Main duties of the job
The Simulation Department is located within the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust's Postgraduate Education Centre and encompasses the following departments: Royal Cornwall Simulation Centre, Resuscitation training, Clinical Skills training and Postgraduate Medical Education. The department provides a comprehensive programme of simulation and practical skills training for the multi-professional workforce within the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust to provide high quality patient centered care.
- To manage the technical services with the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust's Clinical Skills Department.
- Procurement of equipment, maintaining an inventory and training staff to use equipment safely and efficiently.
- To manage the maintenance of equipment including fault diagnosis, solutions to improve equipment performance and adapt new pieces of equipment for high fidelity simulation and skills training.
- To manage the set up and participate in simulation, clinical skills and resuscitation workshops.
- To assist with auditing equipment in clinical areas.
- To liaise and negotiate with a wide range of internal and external contacts, ensuring the effective functioning of the centre resources.

- To manage and maintain all Simulation, Clinical Skills and Resuscitation equipment, within the Simulation Department and develop an electronic inventory.
- Manage the repair, maintenance and cleaning of all Simulation, Clinical Skills and resuscitation equipment in a cost effective manner.
- To lead on the design and adaptation of equipment for use in high fidelity simulations and other skills training scenarios.
- To support medical and non medical education leads and insitu simulation and resuscitation training.
- Implements policies and proposes changes appropriate to area of work.
Procurement
- Manage the ordering of consumables and training equipment for the department.
- Liaise with companies to negotiate the best price and demonstrations of equipment.
- Work closely with the Director of Medical Education and Simulation Practitioner to ensure that procurement of equipment is within the spending plan of the department maintaining efficiency savings wherever possible.
- Assist with the procurement of new equipment for the Simulation Department.
Management of Simulations, Workshops and Resuscitation Training
Through management of resources, ensure that all course equipment is in place and set up correctly and timely.
- Ensure that all equipment is cleaned and put away securely after training.
- Provide a flexible service in consultation with the Simulation Practitioner, to ensure workshops are covered appropriately with a technician when required.
- Provide assistance using Simulation and Clinical Skills equipment for training in clinical areas outside of the Postgraduate department as appropriate.
Teaching and Assessing
To provide training and assessing in the set up and use of Simulation, Clinical Skills and Resuscitation equipment to internal and external service users as required.
- Work with the Simulation Team to become a competent facilitator and assessor of basic generic skills, e.g. basic resuscitation
- To participate in high fidelity simulations both in setting up scenarios and operating the simulators. To participate as an actor in scenarios if required.
- Ensure practical and facilitation skills are regularly evaluated and updated with the support of the Simulation Team.
- Maintain continued personal development in conjunction with a personal development plan discussed regularly with the Line Manager and at annual appraisal.
Audit
- To work collaboratively with the Simulation Practitioner to develop a strategy for auditing simulation equipment in the clinical areas across the Trust.
- To work closely with the Simulation Team to audit training and equipment with the Postgraduate Education Department.
