RCH Charity helps Royal Cornwall Hospital to go further. From re-decorating a palliative care space to building a garden for patients who are critically ill, to supporting our incredible NHS staff and emergency volunteers so that they have a little pressure taken off them, the list at RCH Charity is endless. And now we are about to embark on delivering the largest fundraising appeal RCH Charity has ever launched, to build much-needed patient, family and carer accommodation located on the hospital site in Truro.

There has long been a need for some dedicated accommodation so that loved ones can be together during the most stressful of times and patients who live far from the hospital can have somewhere to stay nearby so they don't miss their appointment, reducing stress, anxiety, costs and potentially improving health. Providing a much more holistic offer than simply a place to stay, the accommodation will improve accessibility to care and bring significant benefit for patients, families and carers, including respite, mental health support a place to meet others in similar situations.

Main duties of the job

The Senior Philanthropy Officer is a new role which is part of the expanding fundraising team to raise funds for the latest multi-million capital appeal. This appeal will be raising funds for a new 18 room patient & family accommodation unit located on the Treliske site in Truro which will be built alongside the new Women & Children's Hospital. The appeal will be largest the charity has ever established and will transform the experience of families and patients during the most stressful of times in hospital.

The most important knowledge, skills & experience required includes:

  • Superb interpersonal skills, and comfortable making direct contact with individual donors to discuss interest and commitment.
  • Knowledge of philanthropic networks in Cornwall and further afield.
  • Excellent ability to assimilate complex information and translate into compelling material.
  • Self-motivated with ability to operate and work effectively using own initiative with minimum supervision.
  • Proven experience of raising funds from new business ideally from major donors.
  • Experience of developing effective relationships across an organisation to achieve mutual objectives and of working across functions, to maximise income generation opportunities.
  • Budget holder experience to ensure that targets are met, proposal budgets are accurately set and financial reports of grantees are accurate.

Key responsibilities include:

Proactively develop strategic, face to face relationships with new and existing high value supporters, delivering excellent stewardship and cultivation and asking at the right time for multi-year financial support.

Work closely with the Appeal Director to create and implement a robust major donor fundraising strategy to raise funds for the appeal and projects post-appeal.

Work with the Appeal Director and other members of the fundraising team as well as the Senior Executive Team, Charitable Funds Board, NHS staff and senior volunteers to build sustainable relationships with major donors.

Work with the Prospect Researcher to gain insight into donors and prospects to inform donor development plans.

Within parameters agreed with the Appeal Director, establish and manage a voluntary Appeal Board of influential individuals who not only will be key donors but also ambassadors, fundraisers and advisors for the appeal.

Contribute to relevant fundraising protocols and policies.

Ensure all fundraising activities are conducted with high standards of integrity and in accordance with relevant legislation; to follow accepted codes of practice as set out by the Institute of Fundraising. Keep informed of any legislative or regulatory changes which impact on the charity, its fundraising and taking effective action when necessary.

Provide monthly progress reports to the Appeal Director and Charitable Funds Committee. Produce and update a pipeline regularly, reviewing income and analyse projects, and create actions plans and mitigations as required.

Create engaging, compelling and memorable communications, tailored to individuals, to update and inform supporters of the impact of their donations.

Invite and host donors to appropriate high-level events. With support of the fundraising team, co-create bespoke events for donors ranging from large receptions to seminars, discussions and intimate dinners, delivering presentations that will inform and inspire audiences to engage with the charity.

Proactively lead on all aspects of financial administration for all the Major Donor grants.

Work with the Appeal Director and Charity Manager to prepare and complete all grant financial returns, ensuring that work is completed in line with financial timescales.

Input into due diligence and risk management

Meet with patients and families who have experience of hospital care and services to understand their needs for on-site family accommodation. Sensitively and confidentially learn about their experiences to help refine/improve proposals for the appeal. Maintain communication and appropriate level of contact with patients and their families.

To provide advice and support and train others to secure funding from major donors as well as helping them to manage that relationship.
