An exciting opportunity has arisen for a specialist nurse to work within our TB specialist nurse team at South Tyneside and Sunderland Hospitals. The Band 6 TB nurse will work along side our Senior TB nurses, TB Respiratory Consultant and Infectious Disease Consultants in the diagnosis and treatment of patient with TB and their families.

We would expect the applicant to have significant respiratory / infection control experience preferably with patient who have TB. They must have proven leadership skills with the clinical skills and non-medical prescriber qualifications or working towards it. The successful candidate must be dynamic, highly motivated and a passionate individual who is committed to high quality patient care. Applicants must have a desire to build upon and share their knowledge with their colleagues who are willing to challenge and commit themselves to our sleep / respiratory service and have a desire to be part of our enthusiastic team.

Main duties of the job

  • Ensures that infectious patients are aware of their responsibilities with regard to further spread of infection and require isolation at start of treatment. Provides support and supervision to all TB patients throughout their treatment (up to 2 years).
  • Assesses compliance with treatment and effectiveness of treatment by clinical observation based on theoretical knowledge of and experience of the potential complications of tuberculosis and the complications of chemotherapy.
  • Advises patients, relatives and their GPs of possible complications of TB therapy and of strategies to manage those which may not require significant intervention.

Monitors patients to ensure that serious side effects from treatment and/or drug interactions are recognised early, and in those situations advises stopping of treatment and arranges urgent consultation with a specialist in infectious diseases or respiratory medicine. TB Nurse Specialists take such decisions independently and the GP informed.

  • Assesses likelihood of non-compliance with TB treatment by looking at all aspects of the clients situation and their support network (if any) and decides on the need for directly observed therapy (DOTS). Clients likely to need this include vulnerable individuals or groups who may present with challenging behaviour.
