Job summary

  • To work with the Chief of Services, Head of Midwifery & Clinical governance lead Midwifery for Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the delivery of the corporate agenda on clinical risk management in respect of the maternity services and the departmental risk management strategy.

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for the risk coordination, implementation and dissemination of a clinical and non-clinical risk within maternity to meet national, regional and local requirements.
  • To lead and ensure the risk agenda meets the requirements for the safety domain on the CQC assessment.
  • Leadership of the patient safety maternity group and risk assessment within the multiprofessional team.

Job responsibilities

A registered midwife able to fulfil the role with the ability to make decisions within current protocols and principles of care in compliance with the NMC Midwives Rules and Code of Practice and unit guidelines.

Responsible for the risk coordination, implementation and dissemination of a clinical and non-clinical risk within maternity to meet national, regional and local requirements.

To lead and ensure the risk agenda meets the requirements for the safety domain on the CQC assessment.

The post holder will be require to undertake investigations following reported patient safety incidents within the service, in line with the patient safety incident response framework (PSIRF).The PSIRF promotes a range of system-based approaches for learning from patient safety incidents.

Lead on developing and implementing patient safety systems, processes and initiatives in line with national and organisational needs. This includes, but is not limited to the patient safety incident investigation processes, Duty of Candour, Safety Alerts, feedback and mechanisms around lessons learnt.

Leadership of the patient safety maternity group and risk assessment within the multiprofessional team.

Provide effective clinical leadership and support to all midwives based on current evidence to ensure an optimum level of safe and effective practice.

The post holder will report to national audits including MBRRACE, UKOSS, Each Baby Counts.

The post holder will ensure that all qualifying cases are reported to HSIB (Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch) and assist them in their investigation.

This midwife will be an experienced midwife but she/he will be expected to continue with post-registration education and development expands their knowledge and skill set further.

The post holder will be expected to participate in the hospital hands on help on call rota/senior midwife rota.
