Consultant Anaesthetist – Neuroanaesthesia

Job summary

UHB is one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in England, serving a regional, national, and international population. The anaesthetic department at the QEHB site is made up of over 130 consultants providing the full spectrum of tertiary and secondary care services.

As a large anaesthetic department we support both local and international trainees and have an active educational programme.The successful candidate will hold the FRCA, or equivalent, and have extensive experience and evidence of extended training in aspects of general anaesthesia. We particularly welcome applications from motivated individuals keen to invest in the development of the service and contribute to a positive departmental culture.

Neuroanaesthesia

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital is one of the biggest neuroscience departments in the UK. As a result, the Neuroanaesthesia group provide perioperative care for a wide range of complex cranial, spinal and neurovascular procedures. Cranial work includes craniotomies for supratentorial and posterior fossa tumours, functional, and base of skull neurosurgery. There is an established awake craniotomy service. Spinal operations include spinal oncology, spinal deformity work and thoracic work requiring one lung ventilation. We have a dedicated Neuroangiography suite treating complex aneurysms/AVMs and offering a 24/7 mechanical thrombectomy service.

The core component of this post is to provide anaesthetic cover for neurosurgery and interventional neuroradiology. Additionally post holders will contribute to anaesthetic cover for a range of surgical specialty lists.

The post holder must understand the significant ongoing changes in the Trusts services and be prepared to take an active part in the change program.

We have included a suggested job plan in Appendix 1, but the successful candidate will be invited to discuss these options with the Specialty and Departmental CSLs on appointment.

In addition to DCC theatre sessions the successful candidate will participate in the Neuroanaesthetic and Mechanical Thrombectomy on call rotas. The present overall on call frequency 1:10 . Trainee on call cover is provided by a Post Fellowship SpR who is also the team lead for out of hours anaesthesia. The Thrombectomy On Call service is Consultant delivered. Delivery of specialty preoperative outpatient clinics and supporting MDT meetings is also expected.

The successful applicant would be expected to have an active interest in teaching. Our registrar anaesthetic training has recently been adapted to reflect the new RCOA Anaesthesia curriculum. We have recently invited applications for trainees wishing to pursue a CESR pathway. Training is coordinated by the specialty education leads but involves informal and formal teaching by all consultants. There is also a departmental programme of teaching mapped to RCOA examination requirements which is co-ordinated by the resident anaesthetic staff with support from consultants.

UHB has an obligation to teach medical students and a commitment to the Birmingham and Warwickshire Schools of Anaesthesia. Involvement in structured teaching and lecturing to both these groups will be expected. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to apply for the post of Honorary Senior Lecturer in the University department of Medical Sciences.
