Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the West Midlands Teenage and Young Adult Cancer Service who care for patients aged 13-24 diagnosed with cancer. We are looking to recruit a Teenage Cancer Trust Youth Support Coordinator for 30 hours per week. This post is funded by Teenage Cancer Trust.

We are looking for an exceptional individual who must enjoy working with Teenagers and Young Adults (TYA), be emotionally resilient and have compassion, sensitivity and a sense of humour. Working as part of the TYA Multidisciplinary team and linking into existing wide-ranging patient services, the successful candidate will be based on the Teenage Cancer Trust Unit on ward 623 Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. The post holder will be responsible for providing both individually tailored and group support both on and off the unit, drawing on their understanding of youth work values and current Youth Work Practice Standards. Working in partnership with other YSC colleagues, they will both lead and contribute to a wide range of appropriate recreational activities, to enable and encourage patients to socialise and remain active as young people throughout the cancer trajectory, living with and beyond cancer. Activities will include evenings and weekends and at locations throughout the West Midlands.

Main duties of the job

The Teenage Cancer Trust Unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, caring for 16 -- 24 year olds, is one of 2 Teenage Cancer Trust units within the West Midlands Service which provides a home from home environment for TYA undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy, symptom control and palliation. This role will work closely with the YSC at Birmingham Children's Hospital to provide a seamless service for patients transitioning from paediatric to adult care. The TYA team understand that this is an impressionable time in the young person's life and aims to provide specialist care and emotional support through their treatment and prepare them for the future. It aims to do this by putting the young person first, cancer diagnosis second.
