Job summary

Marple Medical Practice are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and highly motivated Healthcare Assistant (HCA) to join our multi-disciplinary team.

The Healthcare Assistant will work as part of the practice clinical team to provide high quality, person-centred care to patients. The role involves supporting GPs, Practice Nurses, and other clinicians in the delivery of safe and effective healthcare services, including clinical duties, administrative support and health promotion activies. We encourage applications from qualified candidates with experience of working as a Healthcare Assistant (HCA) from both GP and non-GP clinical settings.

We are offering a permanent, part-time post of 24 hours per week; to be worked over 3 days. NHS Pension, membership of Simply Health Level 1 scheme and opportunity for ongoing professional development and training is offered to the successful candidate.

Main duties of the job

To support the practice nursing and administrative teams in the delivery of clinical and administrative services, working as part of the practice multi-disciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the entitled patient population.

The Healthcare Assistant will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, monitoring long term conditions, preventative care, health promotion and patient education. .

  • Our team comprises 2 GP Partners and 2 salaried GPs, supported by a multidisciplinary team including 2 Practice Nurses, 2 HCAs, a First Contact Practitioner, and an Advanced Clinical Practitioner, alongside skilled administrative staff.

  • Located in large friendly village of Marple, South Stockport, we serve a patient list of approximately 7,000.
  • We are part of the Stockport SES PCN, working closely with PCN colleagues and ARRS staff to enhance capacity and maintain high standards of patient care.
  • As a training practice, we offer placements to medical students and GP trainees at various stages of their careers, fostering valuable learning experiences.
  • Our practice is rated Good by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Job description

Job responsibilities

This role is 24 hours per week to be worked across 3 days:

Monday 8.30am 5.00pm

Tuesday 8.30am 5.00pm

Thursday (alternate weeks)8.30am 5.00pm /12 noon 8.00pm

Also to participate in extended access Saturday clinics a minimum 3 times a year.

Primary key responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

  • Undertake new patient health checks & other health screening.
  • Support the Practice with health promotion programmes
  • Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximitery, blood pressure, temperature and pulse rate, height & weight, BMI and recording findings accurately
  • Gathering lifestyle data from patients
  • Long term condition reviews (as appropriate) including diabetic foot examinations
  • Act as a chaperone as required
  • Blood tests/phlebotomy
  • Vaccinations including flu, pneumococcal and shingles vaccines
  • Carry out ECGs
  • Urinalysis and preparation of specimens
  • Provide support during minor surgical operations as required
  • Provide support during gynaecological procedures for coil and implant clinics
  • Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session
  • Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance
  • Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC policy
  • Deliver opportunistic patient education and promotion of health and well-being

Secondary key responsibilities

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Healthcare Assistant may be requested to:

  • Participate in practice audit as directed by the audit lead
  • Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care
  • Support and participate in shared learning within the organisation
  • Complete opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota
