JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Medical Receptionist
Accountable to: Practice Manager
Supervised by: Assistant Practice Manager/Reception Supervisor
Hours of Work: 17 hours

AIMS OF THE POST:
To provide a responsive and friendly service to patients, whilst maintaining a professional manner at all times. To work as an effective member of the patient services team and wider practice team, helping the Partners and staff to provide the highest possible quality of care to patients. To be polite and willing to help at all times.
Good communications are extremely important within the practice, with patients and with outside agencies and the post-holder will be expected to help ensure that everyone who comes into contact with it holds the practice in high regard. Absolute discretion is required in protecting patient confidentiality.
Major duties and responsibilities of the post:
Main Duties
Medical Receptionist Role
Patients
1. To deal with patients in a courteous and efficient manner
2. To ensure that the required patient information is recorded on computer accurately and promptly.
3. To answer patient queries, using assistance of colleagues where necessary.
4. To book appointments in EMIS web system ensuring accurate patient information
5. To ensure that patients with appointments who need urgent consultations are dealt with appropriately.
6. Monitor the waiting room to ensure smooth flow of patients into consulting rooms.
7. To explain the registration process to new and temporary residents.
Communication
8. To receive and make telephone calls as required, with patients, colleagues and outside agencies.
9. To take messages on EMIS web systems, following set protocols.
10. To ensure written communications are sent following set protocols
11. To liaise with other members of the practice team and support their requests.
Quality
12 To take part in practice meetings and ongoing professional development as necessary.
13 To abide by the Practice protocols and guidelines for the Practice.
14 To comply with systems for health, safety and security in order to protect patients staff, visitors, premises.
15 To ensure that all work is maintained to a high standard.
16 To keep adequate and appropriate records to ensure an effective audit trail

The role of the Medical Receptionist/Administrator is likely to change from time to time to reflect changes in the needs of the Practice or developments in the Care Quality Commission and wider NHS.
