Job summary

Main duties of the job

In this role, you will support the safe and effective use of medicines across the practice by working closely with our clinical pharmacists, GPs, nurses and wider MDT. Your work will help ensure smooth, accurate and efficient medicines processes, supporting both patients and clinicians. You will assist with medicines-related queries, help optimise repeat prescribing systems, and contribute to timely medicines reconciliation. You will also support medication reviews within your scope, promote good medicines management, and help identify opportunities to improve safety and reduce risk.

The role offers a mix of patient-facing and administrative duties, giving you the chance to work directly with patients while also improving practice systems behind the scenes. You will be involved in quality improvement work, contribute to audits, and support the development of good prescribing practice. This is a varied and rewarding position that will allow you to make a real contribution to patient care while developing your career within primary care.

The Pharmacy Technician will support safe, effective and efficient medicines management across the practice. The role involves a blend of patient-facing and administrative responsibilities, supporting medication reviews within scope, medicines reconciliation, repeat prescribing systems, and medicines-related queries. 4. Key ResponsibilitiesMedicines Management
  • Support safe and effective repeat prescribing processes, ensuring accuracy and identifying optimisation opportunities.

  • Undertake medicines reconciliation for new patients, hospital discharges and outpatient correspondence.

  • Support medication reviews within competence, working under the guidance of clinical pharmacists.

  • Promote safe medicines use, patient education and adherence.

Clinical Support
  • Work alongside clinical pharmacists and GPs to support management of long-term conditions.

  • Help identify patients suitable for structured medication reviews or pharmacist input.

  • Assist in implementing prescribing changes agreed through audits, MDT discussions or QI projects.

  • Support drug monitoring processes and recall systems where appropriate.

Quality, Safety and Improvement
  • Contribute to prescribing audits, safety reviews and medicine-related incident learning.

  • Support QI initiatives that improve safety, efficiency and patient experience.

  • Help ensure practice compliance with national and local prescribing policies, NICE guidance and formularies.

Administrative and System Support
  • Maintain accurate, timely electronic records (EMIS).

  • Assist in updating medication templates, protocols and patient information materials.

  • Support stock management and ordering processes for vaccines and practice medicines where required.

  • Handle administrative tasks relating to medicines efficiently and professionally.

Teamwork and Professional Practice
  • Work collaboratively with GPs, pharmacists, nurses, HCAs and administrative staff.

  • Communicate clearly and professionally with all stakeholders.

  • Participate in team meetings, supervision and training.

  • Maintain GPhC registration and undertake required CPD.
