Job summary

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Practice Manager to lead our busy, forward thinking GP surgery. You will be responsible for the smooth day to day running of the practice, ensuring high quality patient services, strong operational performance, and effective support for our clinical team. Although advertised as a pert time post the hours are negotiable for the right candidate.

Main duties of the job

  • Oversee daily operations, patient access, and service delivery

  • Lead and develop administrative and reception teams

  • Manage HR processes, rotas, recruitment, and staff performance

  • Oversee finance, budgeting, payroll, and income streams (QOF, Enhanced Services)

  • Ensure compliance with CQC, information governance, and NHS contractual requirements

  • Drive quality improvement, digital transformation, and patient experience initiatives

  • Work closely with GP partners and the PCN on strategic development

    Job responsibilities

    The Practice Manager provides strategic, operational, and administrative leadership to ensure the GP practice delivers safe, efficient, and high quality patient care. The role oversees day to day operations, governance, finance, HR, IT, and service development, ensuring compliance with NHS contractual and statutory requirements.

    Key Responsibilities

    1. Leadership & Management

    • Lead and support clinical and administrative teams to deliver high quality services.
    • Maintain a positive, collaborative working culture with strong communication across the practice.
    • Ensure the practice meets its strategic aims and adapts to NHS targets and service changes.

    2. Operational Management

    • Oversee day to day running of the practice, ensuring safe, effective, and patient centred operations.
    • Develop and manage appointment systems that work for both patients and clinicians.
    • Ensure accurate and compliant recordkeeping.
    • Liaise with local health organisations and external stakeholders.

    3. Finance & Business Planning

    • Manage financial systems including budgeting, payroll, and financial reporting.
    • Ensure compliance with NHS England contractual requirements.
    • Support partners in achieving QOF and enhanced service targets.
    • Identify opportunities to improve profitability, increase income, and reduce costs.

    4. Human Resources

    • Recruit, train, and supervise nonclinical staff.
    • Conduct appraisals, manage performance, and support staff development.
    • Ensure HR policies and procedures are followed.

    5. Governance & Compliance

    • Ensure the practice meets CQC standards and maintains robust governance systems.
    • Oversee risk management, health and safety, and safeguarding processes.
    • Maintain policies, protocols, and audit cycles.

    6. IT & Information Management

    • Oversee practice IT systems, ensuring data security and efficient digital workflows.
    • Ideally possess experience with clinical systems such as EMIS Web.

    7. Estates & Facilities

    • Ensure the practice environment is safe, wellmaintained, and compliant with regulations.
    • Manage contracts for cleaning, maintenance, and equipment servicing.
