An opportunity has arisen in NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) for a National Clinical Lead for Organ Donation (N-CLOD). Working closely with the Associate Medical Director for Organ Donation and Transplantation the N-CLOD will provide dynamic and proactive clinical leadership to the UK Network of Clinical Leads for Organ Donation (CLODs). Together they will work to support the delivery of Organ Donation and Transplantation UK wide Strategy, which sets out our ambition to make the UK world class in organ donation and to save and improve the lives of our citizens through increased organ donation rates.

The N-CLOD will lead the CLOD team in ensuring the best practice in Organ Donation is embedded into every area of clinical care where the potential for donation exists, including but not limited to Critical Care and Emergency Departments. As the Senior Clinical Leader for Organ Donation they will provide expert advice and guidance to the ODT Senior Management Team, helping to shape future policy and contribute to the development of organisational ambitions in relation to organ donation. They will lead on the production and maintenance of national guidelines associated with the organ donation pathway and in doing so will ensure that all legal, ethical and operational issues that could impact upon the effectiveness of these guidelines are reflected.

To achieve the vision of being world class in organ donation and transplantation the National CLOD will be required to work in close partnership with multiple stakeholders both within NHSBT and across the NHS. An effective and inspirational communicator, the N-CLOD will build strong effective working relationships to support organ donation across the UK in Trusts and Health Boards and with clinical colleagues working across specialities. They will be responsible for the performance of the CLOD network and management of the Regional CLODs, ensuring that these colleagues are working optimally to support organ donation in collaboration with the Specialist Nurse – Organ Donation workforce.

This post requires a Consultant who ideally has previous experience as a CLOD and experience of working as a Clinical leader. The post will require extensive interactions across the NHS and we are looking for an individual with high peer credibility, excellent communication and interpersonal skills and expert knowledge of the professional, legal and ethical framework of UK organ donation.

NHSBT is offering 4-6 Programmed Activities to be worked as a minimum of 2 full days per week Monday to Friday, depending on the responsibilities within the job description undertaken. The expectation is of a minimum commitment of 4 PAs to undertake the Core responsibilities of the role. The successful applicant will need to agree the incorporation of these PAs into their job-plan with their substantive employer. NHSBT will issue an honorary contract.
