Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest acute hospital trusts in the country. We provide a full range of services to more than 675,000 people across Portsmouth, South East Hampshire and West Sussex. Most services are provided at Queen Alexandra Hospital but we also offer a range of outpatient and diagnostic facilities closer to patients’ homes. We handle around 142,000 Emergency Department admissions a year and have the busiest maternity department on the South Coast. The Trust employs around 6,480 staff and is the largest employer in Portsmouth.

The Trust’s vision is to be the best hospital, provide the best care by employing the best people and to ensure our patients are the centre of all that we do. If you share the same values as Portsmouth Hospitals; Respect & Dignity, Quality of Care, Working Together and Efficiency we want you to work for us

This is an exciting opportunity for either newly-qualified or established respiratory consultants to join our busy and visionary department. We are a dynamic team of fourteen consultants and would welcome colleagues who bring any sub-specialty skills, especially in ILD or Sleep; alternately, we can offer sub-specialty training in any of our established services, suitable for the individual and the needs of our department. Most-importantly, we seek highly-motivated colleagues.

Our Trust is one of the largest and busiest in the UK, with a catchment of around 600,000. We have a ten-bedded respiratory HDU, equipped to level-3 specification. Our department provides subspecialty services in our new-build Respiratory Centre for ILD, sleep, COPD, lung cancer, pleural disease, TB, NIV, bronchiectasis and difficult asthma. We are supported by 16 specialist nurses, 4 physiologists and 2 senior respiratory physiotherapists. We have seven respiratory SpRs.

We have a large specialist ILD service, with a case-load exceeding 600. Our ILD clinic is supported by a full time dedicated ILD nurse. Portsmouth is one of the 20 centres in the country approved to prescribe anti-fibrotic agents. We have the service infrastructure to administer and monitor immunosupressives for patients with ILD.

There is a monthly ILD MDT and we hold a two-monthly tele-conference with the Royal Brompton Hospital. Portsmouth ILD service participates in the BTS ILD registry to improve the diagnosis and care for our patients. The ILD service also offers participation in national and international trials for patients with ILD who wish to be involved in clinical research studies.

Since our Sleep service was established 10 years ago, it has undergone rapid development and we see in excess of 1200 new cases per year, including referrals for a wide range of non-respiratory sleep disorders. We have an excellent multi-disciplinary team of nurses and physiologists who work closely with the rest of the Respiratory Department. Our sleep clinics are predominantly Nurse / Physiologist led, with access to a Consultant Sleep clinic for complex cases.

We provide overnight polysomnography, multiple sleep latency tests and maintenance-of-wakefulness testing. We have actigraphy monitoring for suspected circadian disorders and unexplained hypersomnia.

The department has a dedicated procedures suite and day ward which delivers medical thoracoscopy, intrapleural catheters, bronchoscopy, EBUS and bronchial thermoplasty.

Our Trust has three dedicated thoracic radiologists and extensive interventional support.

Our research program is led by an academic chair; research participation extends to ILD, bronchiectasis, asthma, COPD, health services and pleural disease. The research and innovation program is also supported by the Wessex CRN and AHSN. We are the lead centre for several multi-centre trials with research funding obtained from the MRC, NIHR, SBRI and Asthma UK.

Enquiries are welcome to any of the respiratory consultants, particularly the Clinical Director, Dr Ben Green on 02392 286000 (ext 1396). Applicants should be on the GMC Specialist Register for Respiratory and G(I)M, or be within six months of their CCT date at interview.

Closing date: Sunday 18th March 2018
