We have several exciting opportunities for those wishing to gain experience in emergency medicine, train in an innovative and forward-thinking regional major trauma centre. Posts are available to commence as soon as possible, August 2018 and February 2019 for 6 months or 1year.

Whether you have already decided on a career in emergency medicine or just wish to gain more experience to enhance your CV, these posts should be of interest to you. The successful candidates will have the potential to tailor the post to their individual training needs and interests. We can offer clinical experience in general adult emergency medicine, paediatric emergency medicine and major trauma.

The Royal Victoria Infirmary lies in the heart of Newcastle city centre and is one of only 12 nationally designated adult and paediatric major trauma centres. It is also a Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU) and a regional Paediatric Hospital - The Great North Children’s Hospital (GNCH) - with a dedicated 24 hr Paediatric ED. The purpose-built emergency department lies within a state-of-the-art trauma block that allows rapid access to diagnostics and therapeutic interventions. It is a fast paced, high intensity environment which offers plenty of excitement to those who wish to experience it.

We have 24-hour resident Consultants and round the clock middle grade presence giving an unparalleled level of supervision and training in the region. Our consultant team have a wide range of specialist interests and will offer support to develop your skills. Key interests are Ultrasound in ED, Pre Hospital Emergency Medicine, Military Medicine, Paediatric ED, Research, Simulation Teaching and Education.

The department runs a robust educational program that includes dedicated junior doctor teaching, monthly multi-disciplinary trauma meetings, morbidity and mortality meetings and simulation training you will be allocated an Educational Supervisor who will mentor you and help you develop. You will have access to study leave and an accompanying budget which would allow you to complete one of our locally run courses. These include ATLS, ALS, APLS, ETC, PERT and DSTC. You will be encouraged to complete an audit and there are opportunities to be involved in research.
