Clinical, Interventional and Teaching Fellow in Respiratory and General Medicine

Applications are invited for a Clinical, Interventional and Teaching Fellow at Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli. This is a well established fellowship witjh links with UCL, London and new links with Galway. The appointment to the department of medicine will be for one year initially with the potential to extend to two years if required, available from August 2017. This post forms part of the second on-call Middle Grade rota, are full time and attracts appropriate banding for EWTD compliant full shift pattern rota which at present is 1:11.

Applicants must possess full registration with the GMC and should have completed at least four years full time postgraduate training at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a FTSTA in a relevant specialty, or the candidate should have equivalent experience and competencies. Full MRCP is expected. Applicants are expected to be experienced at bronchoscopy, are independent at basic techniques such as bronchial biopsies etc, and have some thoracic ultrasound skills.

At completion of the fellowship, the successful candidate should:

1. Be competent in Thoracosopy

2. Be competent in EBUS

3. Be competent at tunnelled drain insertion

4. Be competent at more advanced bronchoscopy sampling techniques such as TBNA

5. Have experience in interventional bronchoscopy techniques such electro-cautery and stent insertion

6. Have experience in endobronchial valve insertion

7. Have experience / competence at CT/ USS guided biopsy

8. Have competence at supra-clavicular node USS and core biopsy

The aim of the appointment is to provide the post holder with good experience and competence in interventional diagnostic techniques including EBUS and thoracoscopy and also experience in advanced techniques to aid tumour resection or stent insertion. There is an expectation that the successful candidate will also develop teaching skills through Swansea University although other bespoke skills in Research and / or leadership are available. Other then a fixed General Chest Clinic, there are no fixed inpatient commitments other than procedural, unless covering annual and study leave. The post-holder will be attached to the respiratory team covering the respiratory registrar when they are on annual and study leave being available for outpatient clinics, ward rounds and general ward duties. Supervision of all admissions to the Wards, Clinical investigation, diagnosis and treatment of all patients admitted to General Medical Ward and Central Treatment Suite as well as assisting the Consultants in running the Outpatient Clinics. The post holder will assist in the teaching and training of Junior Medical Staff and undergraduate students and participate in regular audit meetings.

The Postgraduate Department in Prince Philip Hospital has a fully developed programme of guest lectures and Grand Round lunchtime meetings, including special interest groups and co-ordinated intra-practice activities and career counselling. The library offers a wide ranging book and journal collection, with interlibrary lending network, excellent IT facilities, and our post graduate department has excellent audio-visual and video-conferencing equipment. West Wales provides a wonderful lifestyle opportunity. Llanelli is situated close to the beautiful beaches of the Gower Peninsula with the rugged coastline of Pembrokeshire further west and spectacular mountains to the North. There is easy access to outdoor pursuits and activities such as surfing, mountain biking, fishing, sailing, hiking and walking in a natural and clean environment. Reasonable property prices and excellent state schools contribute to low living costs and a high quality of life. There are also good road and rail connections to Cardiff and London.
