Donor Carer

Job Reference: 918-BX2502

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT)
Thetford Team
£16,968 to £19,852 pa pro rata

Enjoy a rewarding career like no other.

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) collects, tests, processes, stores and delivers blood, plasma, organs and tissue to NHS Trusts across the UK. From the members of the public who make incredible, life-saving donations to the dedicated members of our team who make it all happen - people are essential to the service we provide. And you could help us change lives.

As a vital member of our team, you’ll welcome and support volunteers giving blood during donor sessions. You’ll enjoy plenty of variety too. You will be driving our equipment vehicles, and loading, unloading and assembling mobile donation session equipment. You will be testing donors to see if they’re able to give blood that day. Or maintaining records and offering basic clinical advice and aftercare. Basically, we’ll need you to be ready to get involved with anything that needs doing. But whatever you’re doing you’ll need to be comfortable with the sight of blood, as you’ll be taking the donations too.

We’ll give you all the technical training you need to perform venepuncture (using needles to take blood), so you don’t need a medical background. But you will need to be a real people person. Your friendly, flexible approach will make donors feel welcome, at ease and valued – after all, we want them to come back and bring their friends and family!

We are recruiting to full and part time positions and the working hours for these roles will be a maximum of 8 days per fortnight working a maximum 75 hours over these days. The earliest start time could be approximately 08:00 at Base with a finish time of approx 18:00, if on a late shift you would be expecting to be back at base at approx 21:00. You can expect to work some long hours, but you won’t be working five days a week or even the same days each week. So we’ll need you to be flexible - but we’ll let you know around two months in advance which days and hours you’ll be working.

In return we offer a range of NHS benefits - including a generous holiday allowance, attractive pension scheme and discounts - and plenty of opportunities for development in a lively, friendly environment.

This advert will close for applications at midnight on the evening of Wednesday 21st March. As part of the selection process for this role, a session visit will be held where shortlisted candidates will have the opportunity to learn more about the role of the donor carer. The session visit is anticipated to be held in the week commencing 2nd April and following this, successful candidates will be invited to attend the assessment day, which is anticipated to be held in the week commencing 9th April.

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) offers a dynamic and friendly working environment where teamwork is highly valued. Personal development is also considered a priority and is supported through extensive training and development opportunities open to all employees.

Three small words, one big difference - Caring, Expert and Quality.

Together we'll save and improve more lives than ever
