Microbiology Laboratory Manager / Trainee Microbiology Laboratory Manager

Due to the retirement of our existing Microbiology Manager, we have an exciting opportunity for a suitably experienced and well-motivated Scientist to lead this pioneering department into the future.

We are looking for an experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist, with a Master’s Degree (or equivalent) and proven technical experience as well as a management and leadership qualification or suitable experience to continue to develop our services and lead our future advancements. Applications from Biomedical or Clinical Scientists with more limited management experience will also be considered; in which case they would start on a 2 year Manager Development Programme, with the goal of reaching full Laboratory Manager responsibilities after 2 years. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to work on a number of emerging projects which include working with our newly awarded managed service contractors, development of molecular platforms and extending ward based point of care testing.

Based at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust (RDE), our microbiology team consists of 4 consultants and 46 technical and support grade staff. The department manages over 300,000 specimens each year across a comprehensive range of microbiological investigations. The department provides microbiology services to the RDE, NHS Devon, and Community Hospitals, and some specialist virology services to North Devon Healthcare Trust and South Devon Healthcare Trust. The department is a GMC recognised Specialist Infection Training centre (2 Registrars), and is approved by Health Education England for Clinical Scientist training (1 trainee), and the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) for Biomedical Scientist training. Microbiology been CPA accredited for a number of years, and is currently going through the transition to UKAS ISO 15189.

The department has 3 specialties, Bacteriology, Virology and Molecular services. Current laboratory equipment includes automated sensitivity testing, maldiTOF, new random access serology analysers, and automated Molecular platforms including ward based molecular Point-Of-Care equipment. The newly appointed manager will be expected to provide professional, technical and managerial leadership across all specialties within the department. The postholder also has responsibility for the joint pathology stores service.

We are looking for applicants who can demonstrate the following:

  • Leadership skills to develop, manage and deliver a comprehensive Microbiology service
  • Delivery of a service that is safe, efficient and provides effective use of resources while meeting the requirements of our customers and users
  • To ensure Microbiology offers services of high and consistent quality in accordance with National guidance and local laboratory procedures and policies
  • Provide professional leadership and take responsibility for supervision and training
  • Risk management and governance experience, ensure Trust procedures are in place
  • Management of Microbiology out of hours service
  • Management of a Pathology stores facility including coordination of pathology stock delivery to hospital wards/ GP Practices/ Community Hospitals
  • Proactively seek, apply and enhance our portfolio of contracts that will not only sustain but also improve the level of commercial income the department receives

The successful candidate is expected to have excellent clinical, customer service and IT skills. They will be flexible, adaptable and patient focussed delivering the highest standards of clinical care.
