Band 8B Lead Clinical Scientist in Nuclear Medicine

We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated Lead Clinical Scientist to join our friendly, dedicated Nuclear Medicine team at the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre. The successful applicant will join a multi-professional team of clinical scientists, radiographers / clinical technologists, radiologists, trainee healthcare scientists, nuclear medicine assistants and an administrator working in the nuclear medicine section of the medical physics department based within the prestigious Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, part of the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. Nuclear Medicine provides a clinical service comprising diagnostic imaging, in-vitro studies and radionuclide therapies, including iodine-131 and radium-223. We have a dedicated two room annex within the Cancer Centre for therapy which is managed by Nuclear Medicine. The department operates a licensed radiopharmacy that provides radiopharmaceuticals daily to a number of other nuclear medicine departments.

In addition to involvement in the clinical nuclear medicine service you will lead a small team of clinical scientists who deliver radiation protection services and scientific support to the East & North Hertfordshire NHS Trust and other healthcare providers and academic organisations who use radioactive sources in North West London, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.

The successful applicant must be able to act as MPE in Nuclear Medicine and hold accreditation as a Radiation Protection Advisor and Radioactive Waste Advisor and have experience of working at this level. Appointment at a lower band in the first instance may be possible for the right candidate who is intending to submit a portfolio for RPA/RWA accreditation within the next six months. A driving licence and use of a car are essential for this role.

The Nuclear Medicine Department is actively involved in the training of healthcare scientists on a range of national and other accredited training programs and the successful applicant will act as training co-ordinator for the department and also undertake the role of training supervisor for some of the trainees. Previous experience of supervising, mentoring and coaching scientists and trainees would be an advantage.

The Trust has a Leadership and Development Program that provides training and development opportunities for leaders at all stages of their careers and you will be encouraged to participate in the program. Mount Vernon Hospital is situated in a pleasant residential area on the borders of the Home Counties and only a short tube ride into central London. The Cancer Centre has close links with the Paul Strickland Scanner Centre which is situated on the same site.

In addition, you will receive a High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of your basic salary, subject to a minimum payment of £3,553 and a maximum payment of £4,528 per annum pro rata.
