One of the two Microbiology laboratories operated by Morecambe Bay Hospitals; the department is fully computerised (TD synergy) and holds CPA (UK) Ltd and pending UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation. All sub specialties are available within the laboratory with sample requests in the region of 250,000 samples per annum

Two positions have arisen in the Microbiology Department at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust for specialist Biomedical Scientists based in the Microbiology department in Furness General Hospital

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT) is composed of three main hospital sites; Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Furness General Hospital and Westmorland General Hospital covering a wide geographical area encompassing North Lancashire and South Cumbria.

The Barrow location allows easy access to the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales and Morecambe Bay, each offering extensive recreational opportunities. The area also benefits from some excellent schools and colleges.

This is a challenging opportunity to participate in a team of Advanced Biomedical Scientists, Specialist Biomedical Scientists, Associate Practitioners and Healthcare Science Assistants providing a high quality, efficient Microbiology service within this accredited Microbiology laboratory.

The Microbiology laboratories across the Trust work closely together utilising common analytical platforms and IT systems and the department is committed to continuous development and quality improvement.

The department is also dedicated to developing the next generation of Biomedical Scientists; supporting several trainee Biomedical Scientists within Microbiology and further developing Registered and Specialist Biomedical Scientists to advance their careers, education, knowledge and skills. In addition, the UHMBT Pathology service supports local universities offering placements to undergraduate students.

You will be an enthusiastic, self-motivated and experienced registered Biomedical Scientist, trained in Microbiology, to join the professional team in our busy, friendly laboratory.

Candidates who do not possess a completed Specialist portfolio in Microbiology must be able to demonstrate equivalent level of knowledge. (Recently qualified HCPC registrants may be considered for this position but will be appointed at Band 5 until IBMS specialist portfolio is completed)

Participation in weekend and Bank Holiday rotation is a requirement of the post, as is partaking in the single disciplinary out of hour’s service (after an appropriate level of training)

Continuing professional development is encouraged within the department. All members of staff have the opportunity to attend training courses and seminars.

Please note:
Applications will not be accepted from individuals who do not possess HCPC biomedical scientist registration unless this will be achieved before April 2018

Anyone newly appointed to the trust will be subject to the completion of a satisfactory 6 month probationary period (this includes bank staff). This will give the new staff member an opportunity to become familiar with the role and working environment.
