International medical graduates – job opportunities in the NHS

Changes to the immigration rules in 2008 prevented many international medical graduates (IMGs) from taking up medical training posts in the NHS based on their Tier 1 (General) or HSMP immigration status. However, IMGs and doctors from outside of the European Economic Area (EEA) are free to apply for and take up employment in training posts that may qualify for sponsorship under Tier 2 of the Home office points-based immigration system, which replaced the previous work permit scheme in November 2008.

NHS Jobs is working with employers across England and Wales to help promote suitable opportunities to doctors from outside the EEA that could qualify for sponsorship under the Tier 2 rules. These vacancies can easily be identified by their inclusion of “This role may be suitable for non-UK or non-EEA job applicants wishing to apply for Home Office Tier 2 sponsorship” within the advert. A full list of current opportunities can be found here , or by the inclusion of the keywords “wishing to apply for Home Office Tier 2 sponsorship”, including quote marks, in the Quick search tool on the homepage or the Skills box in more detailed searches and jobs-by-e-mail settings.
